I was asked to shoot some baseball memorabilia from the Boston Red Sox for an upcoming Nikon trade show. The images will be displayed on a wall next to actual items to show the amazing quality images that comes from Nikon digital cameras. This shot started on a whiteboard and one of the first things that came to mind was creating a locker room setup in the middle of one of Nikon's meeting rooms. I thought it would be cool if we could get an authentic locker to stage with many of the items we had to work with. After my collegue Joe made the arrangements, the locker came and I went to town setting it up after executing some still life setups.
the idea: Take some of the authentic baseball memorabilia and create an authentic locker room setup with the appearance that light from a ficticiuos window was illuminating the locker, the jersey and the other items on the set. the motivation: In this case just the simple request that was made for me to shoot it and the opportunity to work with the Speedlights, D200 and several lenses I've be contemplating using for a shot. the challenge: Making this all the light happen from scratch and making it look as real as possible. the key to making it work: Again, as most situations, having the patience to sort this all out in my head and make it a reality. The need to precisely position lights to create the natural effect I was looking for was a necessity. The grouping capabliltiy of the Nikon Creative Lighting System gave me the wireless freedom needed to easily position the lights where I had to. What happened if I missed the mark? Digital gave me the instant feedback I needed to see the mistakes and make adjustments while the SU-800 Wireless Commander allowed me to easily add or subtract light from any of the Speedlight groups. The happy surprise... the grating on the sides of the locker that cast remarkable shadows across the jersey. The ultimate compliment: I guess this one is as simple as Joe liking this and many of the other shots.
